Welcome back to Our Little Vegan Kitchen and Garden, where we transform our modest yard into a thriving oasis of greenery and deliciousness! šæš Today, Iām excited to share our latest gardening adventure: growing Purple Sprouting Summer Broccoli in containers. If youāve ever thought about adding a unique twist to your garden, this is the perfect place to start.
Unlike its winter counterpart, Purple Sprouting Summer Broccoli is a warm-weather variety that thrives in the summer months and doesn't take months to develop.Ā This vibrant, nutrient-packed veggie offers a burst of colour and flavour to your garden and meals. The purple florets are not only stunning but also rich in vitamins and antioxidants, making them a fantastic addition to a healthy diet.
Our journey with Purple Sprouting Summer Broccoli started with a simple goal: to enjoy fresh, homegrown broccoli throughout the year. Unlike regular broccoli, which has a single large head, this variety produces multiple smaller florets, perfect for continuous harvesting. The taste is milder and sweeter, making it a hit in our kitchen for everything from salads to stir-fries. You can pick it week after week and it just keeps producing.Ā Ā
Our garden, affectionately known as the Yarden, is a space filled with pots and containers of all shapes and sizes. Hereās how we successfully grow Purple Sprouting Summer Broccoli in our Yarden:
Select a deep container with good drainage. Broccoli plants need room for their roots to spread, so aim for a pot that is at least 12 inches deep. We have ours in the Raised Bed but you can use pots - We have four plants in the raised Bed and two in pots on each side of the bed , what can I say we love broccoli!!
Use a high-quality potting mix enriched with compost. Broccoli loves nutrient-rich soil. Plant seeds about 1/2 inch deep and keep the soil moist. We prefer starting with seedlings this year to get a head start as the raised bed was a late addition to The Yarden, which you can either buy or grow from seeds indoors.
Place your container in a sunny spot. Broccoli needs at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Watering in the morning helps prevent diseases.
Feed your plants with a balanced organic fertilizer every 3-4 weeks. As the plants grow, you may need to stake them to keep them upright. Keep an eye out for pests like aphids and caterpillars, and use organic pest control methods if necessary.Ā
We netted our Broccoli in Spring as we had Cabbage White Butterflies, this stopped any caterpillars from feasting on them.Ā We also use permaculture methods in the Yarden by planting our crops with nasturtium and other plants to encourage natural predators.Ā
Harvest the florets when they are firm and bright purple. Regular harvesting encourages the plant to produce more. Simply cut the heads off with a sharp knife or secateurs and enjoy fresh, delicious broccoli!
Rotate Your Crops: Avoid planting broccoli in the same container year after year to prevent soil depletion and diseases. - next year we will grow it in containers and put beans in the main bed.
Companion Planting-Ā Planting herbs like dill or chamomile nearby can help deter pests. We also use Sage and nasturtium
-Mulching: Use organic mulch to retain moisture and keep the soil temperature stable.
We grow Purple Sprouting Summer Broccoli because itās a delight to the senses and the palate. Itās a joy to watch these plants thrive in our Yarden and an even bigger joy to incorporate them into our vegan meals. Broccoli is a powerhouse of nutrition, providing fibre, vitamins C and K, and numerous antioxidants. Itās a staple in our diet, supporting our commitment to health and wellness.
Growing our food connects us to nature and brings immense satisfaction. We hope youāre inspired to try growing Purple Sprouting Summer Broccoli in your own space, whether itās a garden, balcony, or, like us, a Yarden full of pots and containers.
Happy gardening, and hereās to a bountiful harvest! š±š„¦
