As autumn sets in, growing kale and radicchio can be a rewarding endeavour for gardeners wishing to add vibrant greens and enticing reds to their harvest. These leafy vegetables not only thrive in cooler temperatures but also provide rich flavours and nutritional benefits. And we have planted both into the Veg bed with the other Vegetables for Autumn which you can read about here
Planting: Kale is a hardy green that flourishes in autumn. Begin by sowing seeds directly into the soil, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep, ensuring they are spaced roughly 12 inches apart to allow for full leaf development. It’s best to plant kale about six to eight weeks before the first expected autumn frost.
Soil and Sunlight: Kale prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Choose a spot in your garden that receives ample sunlight; however, kale will tolerate partial shade, particularly in warmer climates.
Care: Regular watering is crucial, about 1 to 1.5 inches per week, to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Mulching can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. As temperatures drop, kale’s flavour improves, becoming sweeter after a frost.
Harvesting: Begin harvesting as soon as the leaves are large enough to eat, usually within 55-75 days of planting. Pick the outer leaves first, allowing the inner leaves to continue growing for ongoing harvests.
Planting: Radicchio thrives in the cooler months of autumn, known for its distinct red and white leaves and slightly bitter taste. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep, spacing them 12-18 inches apart to allow for rosette formation.
Soil and Sunlight: Like kale, radicchio prefers well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Aim for a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0. Radicchio requires full sun to develop its characteristic colours, although it can handle partial shade.
Care: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells, as this promotes even growth and prevents bitterness. Regularly remove weeds and use a balanced organic fertilizer if necessary.
Harvesting: Radicchio is ready to harvest in about 75-90 days. Cut heads when they are firm and dense, just above the soil line. To enjoy the sweetest flavour, harvest after the first frost when temperatures drop.
By incorporating kale and radicchio into your autumn garden, you not only enhance your garden's visual appeal but also enrich your meals with nutritious, homegrown produce. These versatile vegetables can complement a variety of dishes, making your autumn harvest both delicious and healthful
