Welcome to the Organic Yarden Monthly Garden Job Guides — your month-by-month companion to growing your own food organically.
Gardening can sometimes feel like there is an endless list of things you should be doing. Sow this, plant that, prune something else… and don't forget to water everything! 😂
So I've put together these monthly guides to make things a little easier.
Each month, we'll look at what to sow, what to plant, what to harvest and the jobs worth doing in the garden, along with tips for looking after your soil, encouraging wildlife and preparing for the seasons ahead.
These guides are written with growing in Ireland in mind, but many of the ideas can be adapted to wherever you garden.
Whether you're growing in a raised bed, allotment, greenhouse, polytunnel, containers, pots or even a small balcony, there's always something you can do.
🌱 What to Sow – vegetables, herbs and flowers you can start from seed.
🪴 What to Plant – the plants, seedlings and crops that can go into your growing space.
🥕 What to Harvest – enjoy the crops that are ready and make the most of your homegrown food.
🌿 Garden Jobs – feeding, mulching, pruning, supporting plants, preparing beds and keeping everything growing happily.
🐝 Wildlife & Pollinators – simple ways to make your garden welcoming to bees, butterflies, birds and other garden visitors.
♻️ Organic Gardening – working with nature, improving your soil and avoiding unnecessary chemicals and waste.
📝 Planning Ahead – because a little preparation now can make the next few months much easier.
One of the lovely things about growing your own food is that the garden is always changing.
January isn't going to look like June, and September certainly doesn't behave like April!
Some months are busy with sowing and planting, while others are more about harvesting, protecting crops, preparing the soil or simply keeping an eye on what's happening.
And that's okay.
You don't have to do everything.
Pick the jobs that suit your garden, your available time and the weather you're actually having.
After all, the garden didn't read the calendar.
If you're new to growing, don't feel that you need to tackle the whole list at once.
Choose a few jobs each month and build from there.
A handful of pots can become a vegetable garden.
A raised bed can become a food-growing haven.
A small patch can become a pollinator-friendly space.
You don't need a perfect garden to grow your own food. You just need somewhere to start.
So grab your gloves, have a wander around your garden and let's see what this month's growing season has in store.
🌱 Grow organically. Grow sustainably. Grow what you love.
