August in the Organic Yarden: Harvest, Sow and Keep the Garden Thriving.

There is something magical about August in the garden.

After months of sowing, watering, weeding (and chasing the occasional hungry slug!), August rewards us with baskets overflowing with fresh vegetables, colourful flowers and juicy fruit. It is one of my favourite months because every walk around the garden feels like a treasure hunt. One minute I'm picking tomatoes for dinner, the next I'm discovering another courgette that somehow doubled in size overnight!

But August isn't just about harvesting. It's also the month where experienced gardeners are already thinking ahead to autumn and even next spring.

Here's what's keeping me busy in the Organic Yarden this month.

Harvest Little and Often.

August is harvest season.

Pick vegetables regularly to keep plants producing. Beans, courgettes, cucumbers and tomatoes will all reward frequent harvesting with even more crops.

Don't forget your soft fruits either. Strawberries, raspberries and blackberries are at their best now. Pick them every couple of days and enjoy them fresh, freeze them or turn them into delicious homemade jams and ice cream

Feed Hungry Crops.

Your tomatoes, peppers and chillies have worked incredibly hard all summer.

Keep them well-fed with an organic high-potash fertiliser to encourage plenty of flowers and beautifully ripened fruit. A weekly feed can make a huge difference to the final harvest.

Keep Watering.

Even if we've had a little Irish rain, containers and raised beds dry out surprisingly quickly. Hard, especially as we have had a hosepipe ban recently - I water the most in need crops and plants with my watering can.

Water deeply rather than little and often. Early morning or late evening watering gives plants the best chance to absorb moisture before it evaporates.

Cucumbers and courgettes especially appreciate consistent watering. Irregular watering can lead to bitter fruit or poor harvests.

Sow for Autumn and Winter

One of the biggest mistakes new gardeners make is thinking the growing season is over..

In reality, August is one of the best months for sowing.

Now is a great time to sow:

Watch for Pests Naturally.

Warm weather means insects are busy too.

Keep an eye out for aphids and caterpillars. Rather than reaching for chemicals, I prefer encouraging nature to help.

Ladybirds, hoverflies and birds do a fantastic job, while companion planting helps confuse pests and attract beneficial insects. If needed, organic solutions such as neem oil can also help

Deadhead Flowers Every Morning.

One of my favourite jobs!

I spend a few peaceful minutes each morning deadheading flowers while listening to the birds.

Removing faded blooms encourages plants to keep flowering for weeks longer, and I honestly find it one of the most relaxing parts of gardening.

Sometimes gardening isn't about producing food. Sometimes it's simply about slowing down.

Think Ahead to Spring.

It feels strange while you're surrounded by summer flowers, but now is actually the perfect time to order spring bulbs.

Tulips, daffodils, crocuses and alliums often sell out quickly, so ordering now means you'll have plenty of choice when planting season arrives.
